The North Otago Hawke Cup team defeated South Canterbury by a solitary wicket in the warm up game played at Whitestone Centennial Park Oval on Sunday.

Batting first South Canterbury made 156 all out in the 46th over with Lill (46), Slee (23) and Beck (21) making significant contributions to their total. Lachlan Brookes made it a debut to remember taking 4-37 of 9 overs, while Cameron Grubb took 3-32.

In its chase the home side looked to be in trouble losing its first five wickets for the addition of only 40 runs. Tom Dempster and Regan George then combined to add 78 runs for the 6th wicket, before Dempster was caught out for 57 runs. With his wicket, South Canterbury then bought themselves back into the game taking three more wickets to leave the score 146/9. Number 11 Grubb then made short work of the 11 runs required to win, scoring his 10 not out of only 5 balls, to help his side to a 1 wicket win. George was there at the end with a will compiled 56 of 71 balls. Slee (4-33) and Rooney (4-20) took four wickets each for South Canterbury.

North Otago will now play an intersquad game in the coming weeks before taking on South Canterbury again, this time in the first round of the Hawke Cup Zone series, at Timaru on the 3rd and 4th of December.
