Oamaru and St Kevin's College became joint Borton Cup leaders after the second round of the senior cricket competition in Oamaru on Saturday. Oamaru defeated Albion by 45 runs at Awamoa Park while St Kevin beat Waitaki Boys High School by two wickets at St Kevin's top ground. In the other game Valley accounted for Union at Weston by 43 runs.

Albion won the toss and asked Oamaru to bat first. Runs came at a three an over rate early in the innings, 57 for three after 14 overs and 96 for three after 27 of the 50 overs. Josh Gutsell sparked Oamaru top scoring with 37 while opener Robbie Hill added 20 and all-rounder Khalil made 25.Brad Kernahan was the pick of the Albion bowlers taking four for 18 off 6.2 overs while Paul O'Dell claimed three for 20 off ten overs.

The Albion top order could not cope with David Sewell who claimed three quick wickets to have Albion reeling at 26 for four after just six overs. Kernahan was the only Albion batsman to show any real resistance making 34. Albion was finally dismissed in the 31st over for 107. Sewell finished with four for 25 and was backed up by Khalil and Paul Selbie who both finished with two wickets.

Waitaki Boys won the toss and decided to bat first against St Kevin's and after 17 overs was 75 for two with Hayden Tisdall making 28. Waitaki slumped a little in the middle order to be 142 for six after 29 overs with Kieran Paterson adding a solid 39. Craig Robertson's 34 enabled Waitaki to finish at 178 in the 38th over's Kevin's all-rounder Ben Cant took four for 32 and Tim O'Malley, three for 30.

Chris Smith and Ben Cant started slowly with 19 runs coming off the first five overs but the College side slumped to 40 for three after 11 overs with Smith going for 13, Tim O'Malley for six and Sean Conlan without scoring. Cant and Tom Squire(35) then featured in a good fourth wicket stand to take the total through to 134 for seven after 30 overs. Cant batted through the innings to be unbeaten on 61 as St Kevin's went through to 155 for eight in the 38th overstuff Dickinson took three for 21 while Miles Medlicott took two for 33 after claiming two for 19 in his first five over spell.

Union won the toss at Weston Park and put Valley in to bat. Valley started slowly at 32 for one after 15 overs. The next 14 overs produced 74 runs with Byron Neil leading the way with 21. North Otago rugby loose forward David Simpson sparked the Valley innings with 46 and he received excellent support from Geoff Mansfield(25) before the innings closed at 178 in the 47th over. Duncan Drew claimed three for 51 off seven overs while Dan Conlan and Paul Johnston took two wickets each.

Union started disastrously being nine for two after five overs. Union slumped to 26 for four with Craig Direen grabbing three quick wickets at one stage having taken three for six. Union struggled for runs , 55 for five after 21 overs, 76 for six after 27 overs and 79 for seven after 34 overs. Thomas Shields displayed some resistance with 27 before the Union innings closed at 135 in the 45th over. Direen finished with three for 24 while Geoff Mavor took three for 35.
