Oamaru moved to the outright lead in Borton Cup cricket when it defeated co leaders going into the third round, St Kevin's College by 14 runs at Whitestone stadium on Saturday. Valley retained its second place equal with St Kevin's with a 60 run win over Albion while Union recorded its first win of the season when it defeated Waitaki Boys High School by six wickets at King George Park.
Oamaru won the toss and batted first against St Kevin's and after 11 overs was 32 for one. Oamaru doubled its score in the next nine overs to be 74 for three but then lost three quick wickets as the side struggled to 106 for six with opener Robbie Hill adding 22 and James McAuslan,34. At 139 for seven after 36 overs Oamaru appeared to be slumping but Bevan Smith(20) held the innings together as Oamaru battled through to 186 before the final wicket fell in the 45th over. Peter O'Malley was the most successful College bowler taking four for 53 off his ten overs while Ben Cant and Ben Dickworth claimed two wickets each
A 95 run opening stand between Cant(35) and Chris Smith(45) gave St Kevin's a promising start but the remaining batsmen failed to capitalise on it and the side was finally dismissed for 172, 15 runs short of victory, in the 49th over. Paul Selbie and Josh Gutsell took three wickets each while David Sewell took two for 22.
Valley beat Albion by 60 runs at Weston after being put in by Albion. Valley added 20 runs off the first nine overs but then slipped to 43 for three after 18 overs. It was only some dogged batting from Kelvin Mansfield(25) that carried Valley to 115 before the tenth wicket fell in the 40th over. Jamie Ferris and Dylan Winter took three wickets each for Albion with Paul O'Dell and Marshall Smith taking a couple each.
Albion was dismissed for a mere 55 runs in the 22nd over with David Simpson returning the superb figures of ten overs, six maidens, seven for nine while Geoff Mavor took two for 12.
Union won the toss at King George Park and put Waitaki Boys in to bat. Waitaki opened safely and at 29 for one after 11 overs looked set. But the next six overs saw Union claim six wickets for the addition of only 15 runs before the side was dismissed for 53 in the 22nd over. Phil Crossan took four for 25 off his ten overs while Dan Conlan and Ben Sheat took two wickets each. Union lost opener Duncan Drew early in the innings but 30 runs from Antony Cromwell before he retired hurt took Union through to 57 for four in the 15th over with Jordan Horrell taking two for 22 off five overs.
