Union and Oamaru are tied at the top of the Borton Cup points table after the first half of the competition was completed on Saturday, both on 50 points after the first five games before the holiday competition, starting next Saturday.

Albion is in third with 30 points then Valley (20), St Kevin’s College (20) and Waitaki Boys’ High School(10). Newcomer Glenavy is chasing a win.

Waitaki Boys’ beat Glenavy by 59 runs at Glenavy.

Albion halted St Kevin’s run with a 129-run win at the College top ground, while Valley’s 153 runs couldn’t stop Oamaru’s six-wicket win at the Whitestone No1 inner ground.

Batting first at the Glenavy domain, Waitaki Boys’ was limited to 204 for nine. Player-coach Angus Philpott led the way with 56, while Matt Graham took three for 45 for Glenavy and Henry Semple claimed three for 40 off seven overs.

Against the Waitaki Boys’ attack of Quin Waddel, two for 21, and George Mavor, three for 30, Glenavy made 145 runs. Russell McCulloch was the pick of the Glenavy batsmen with 41.

The Albion batting was too strong for the St Kevin’s bowling attack.

Albion faced the full 50 overs and made 242 for seven.

A couple of veterans in Brad Kernahan (75) and Steve Halliwell (85 not out) dominated the College attack.

Kernahan hit 12 fours and one six, while Halliwell hit 11 fours and a six.

Bowling for St Kevin’s, Lachlan Brookes took three for 32 and Anthony Docherty had two for 75.

Only Liam Direen (32) and Harry Murphy (19) showed any stickability as the side was dismissed for 113 runs, giving Albion a 129-run victory.

Oamaru chased down Valley’s innings of 153 for a six-wicket win at the Whitestone main ground.

Batting first, Valley faced 33 overs, Hamish McKenzie dominating with 52 runs, hitting six fours and a six and featuring in two crucial partnerships.

With Simon Robins, McKenzie added 30 runs for the eighth wicket, while with Levi Ewing he added an invaluable 53 runs for the 10th wicket.

Bowling for Oamaru, Zac Naldrett took four for 48 and Nick Johnston claimed two for 13 off seven overs.

Chasing 154 runs for victory, Stephan Grobler (62), Nick Johnston (33) and Jordan Bartlett (28) passed the Valley total with six wickets in hand.

Ewing took three for 20 as Oamaru went to the joint-top team in Borton Cup cricket with Union.

Next Saturday, the Holiday competition will play its first round with Valley playing Albion at Weston, Glenavy at home to Union and Oamaru playing Union B at Whitestone inner ground.
