Three teams, Oamaru, Valley and St Kevin's College are tied at the top of the senior club cricket competition after the playing of the fifth round of Borton cup on Saturday. Valley beat hitherto unbeaten Oamaru by 26 runs, St Kevin's beat Union by 27 runs and Albion defeated Waitaki Boys High School by eight wickets.
Valley won the toss and decided to bat first against competition leaders Oamaru and faced only 30 of its 50 overs before the tenth wicket fell with the total at 125. Gavin Strachan top scored with 39, while bowling for Oamaru, Khalil took four for 32, Josh Gutsell claimed three for 43 and David Sewell took two for 16 off seven overs.
Oamaru started disastrously losing its first two wickets without a run on the board and battled to 57 for five after 15 overs. The side faced only nine more overs before it was dismissed for 99. David Simpson continued his good form with the ball for Valley taking three for 26 while Hamish McKenzie and Geoff Mavor took two wickets each.
Union asked St Kevin's to bat first on the College top ground and the school side made a solid start at 51 for one after 18 overs. Ben Cant held the innings together top scoring with 40 and he received solid backup from Mike Lamont(33) and Dan McCloy(20) before the innings closed at 160 in the 49th over. Dan Conlan took three for 30 and Paul Johnston two for 11 for Union.
Union slumped to 44 for four after 15 overs and 56 for five after 22 overs and it became a matter of survival as Union struggled to 100 for seven after 30 overs. Cant completed a good double taking three for seven off his ten overs while Peter O'Malley and Chris Smith took two wickets each.
Albion beat Waitaki Boys by eight wickets at Awamoa Park. Waitaki decided to bat first and after 15 overs was battling at 48 for seven. Some inspired batting from Craig Robertson (63 not out) carried Waitaki to 115.
