David Sewell showed the Otago selectors he was ready for Shell Trophy cricket in North Otago's national districts championship game as Central Otago over the weekend.

On a fast track at Alexandra's Molyneux Park, Sewell snared 11 wickets for the match, but it wasn't enough to stop Central Otago taking first innings honours.

After winning the toss, North Otago elected to bowl, and dismissed Central Otago for 156 in 63.5 over's.

In reply, North Otago made 128, with Neil Rushton top-scoring with 36.

Chasing 226 to win after Central made 198 in their second innings, North Otago reached 80 for four before play was abandoned after both sides agreed a result would not be forthcoming.

Left-arm in-swinger Sewell took six wickets for 46 runs off 19 over's in the first innings. In the second, he grabbed five for 45 off 13 over's.

Central Otago's Shayne O'Connor had a remarkable economical weekend with the ball, O'Connor bowled 17 over's in North Otago's first innings, conceding just 21 runs and taking three wickets.

The weekend's cricket was the final round of the zone six national districts cricket competition. Dunedin Metropolitan will challenge Northland for the championship.
