First day report by Oamaru Mail Correspondent
The weather was perfect for cricket, and the wicket was all that could be desired. Ongley lost the toss, and Otago batted. They started well, T. D. Adams shaping confidently. North Otago felt the want of a fast bowler as the wicket was too good to admit of slow bowlers getting very much work on the ball. Uttley bowled well, and kept the score down at his end, but the score increased rapidly. The fielding was patchy, Adams giving one or two opportunities of dismissal. At the luncheon admittedly 200 was in sight, with only four wickets down. On recommencing Uttley bowled Adams, and the others were tempted to go out to Ongley's lobs, three being stumped. The innings closed for 251. North Otago made a bad start, Uttley poking back an easy one to the bowler. M. Ongley and Borton shaped well, but the latter was clean bowled when he looked likely to make a big score. Hudson and Ongley continued to make runs slowly until the former got his leg in front of a full toss. "Joe" Ongley, who took Mitchell's place in the team, did not last long, but F. Ongley kept up his end effectively until given out leg before. Jones and M. Ongley played out time and the aspect, which at one time looked anything but rosy, now appears more promising. M. Ongley batted very well, punishing the ball forcefully. Otago's fielding was not too good and several chances were missed.
