An excellent opening partnership by I. Griffiths and D. Smith (Ashburton), which produced 128 runs, was a feature of the first day of the cricket match between the teams representing North Otago and the combined Ashburton, South Canterbury, North Canterbury, and West Coast Minor and Sub-associations at Ashburton yesterday.
Smith, who batted aggressively, made 90 runs before being caught, and Griffiths, who played a more defensive game, scored 92 before being bowled.
The combined team was all out for 282. With the exception of A. Wright, who scored 37, the performance of other Combined batsmen was mediocre.
North Otago had scored 64 runs for the loss of four wickets when play stopped for the day. D. Malloch (not out 33) was the best scorer.
