Waitaki Boys High School retained the Payne-Tempero challenge trophy when it defeated Valley at Milner Park by seven wickets. In the other Borton Cup game Union on its home ground beat Albion by one wicket.
The WBHS/Valley game was highlighted by two centuries both from South African player coaches, Stephan Grobler(Waitaki Boys) and Francoise Mostert(Valley).Valley batted first and Mostert’s 102 which included thirteen fours and a six set the side on its way to a total of 205 with Mostert facing 129 balls. Only Richard Witham(23) gave Mostert any real support as the pair added 82 runs for the fourth wicket. Blake James and Josh Haywood claimed three wickets each while Grobler claimed two for 25.
Waitaki Boys cruised to a seven wicket win with Grobler unbeaten on 107 and with Dallas Mahuika(66) Grobler produced a 121 run second wicket partnership. Grobler’s 107 included fifteen fours and a six while Mahuika hit eleven boundaries. Bowling for Valley Mostert took two for 31.
Union defeated Albion by one wicket at King George Park. Albion batting first made 198 for nine in its fifty overs with Jeremy Smith top scoring with 76 while Dylan Winter added 25.Bowling for Union Paul Johnston took four for 36, Isaac Shields, two for 21, and Brad Fleming, two for 35.Union had a solitary wicket in hand when it passed the Albion total with Duncan Drew top scoring with 63 while Jake Greenslade hit a quick-fire 23 which included three sixes. Bowling for Albion Ricky Whyte, Paul Odell and Dylan Winter took three wickets each while as Union battled through to 201 for nine.
