North Otago defeated Mid Canterbury on the first innings in a Hawke Cup elimination game played at Milner Park over the weekend.
Mid Canterbury won the toss and asked North Otago to bat first at Milner Park. Openers Glynn Cameron(31) and Jeremiah Shields(22) batted solidly before Shields was out leg before. Cameron played the anchor role as North Otago then lost Gary Mahuika(8), Ben Cant(10), Duncan Drew(7) and Francois Mostert(6) as the home side slumped to 134 for eight before Sean Conlan(39) and fifteen year old Nathan Smith(24) produced a ninth wicket stand of 55 to guide North Otago to a first innings total of 193.Batting at seven Jeremy Smith added an invaluable 25.Robbie Polson was the best of the Mid Canterbury bowlers taking four for 39 while Harry Jones and Tom Meyrick claimed three wickets each.
North Otago made a dramatic start to Mid Canterbury’s first innings with openers Polson and Nick Gilbert both out with only six runs on the board.Mid Canterbury then lost Jono Print and Bo Houston with the total at 31 before Matt Winter(54) and Will Southby(26) produced a fifth wicket stand of 81 before both went in the space of one run with the total at 113.Tom Meyrick was the seventh wicket to fall at 120 but Matt Tait(21) and Harry Jones(3) saw the side through to 146 for seven at stumps.
Rain delayed the start of the second day but after 43 minutes play got under way and Mid Canterbury was dismissed for 172 with Matt Tait, overnight on 21 taking his total through to 37 before his dismissal and the innings closed at 172.Leftarm medium pace bowler Chris Ware took four for 69 off 25.3 overs while Francois Mostert took three for 46 and fifteen year old Nathan Smith knocked the top off to take two for 19 off seven overs.At tea on the second day North Otago was 207 for six an overall lead of 228 with a minimum of 45 overs and 150 minutes remaining in the day.
North Otago declared at 241 for eight an overall lead of 262. Mostert led the way with 70 while Cameron(41),Cant(35) and Jeremy Smith(25) made invaluable runs.Polson, Wilton and Meyrick took two wickets each for Mid Canterbury.
Mid Canterbury took up the challenge set by North Otago and with 45 minutes of play remaining were 117 for four chasing the 263 needed for victory. Polson made 39, but Winter(9) and Print(10) went cheaply. Southby hit out for his 26 while Houston was anchoring the innings on 30 not out.
