South Canterbury v. North Otago
Francois Mostert bowls against Bullar in the Hawke Cup Challenge
Friday, 4 February 1921

The South Canterbury Association sent a team to Oamaru yesterday, which played a match against the North Otago eleven on the School Ground. The wicket was hardly so good as usual, but was not so difficult, as several of the batsmen showed. Batting first, North Otago made 186. Gale and Forsyth made a good opening to Cockroft and Hudson, and while Gale hit hard, Forsyth was patient and very useful. Hudson, the slow bowler, did not strike a length and was punished severely, Gale and Uttley both hitting straight sixes of him. Weir, when put on, proved very useful, and cleaned up Uttley, Forsyth and Jacobs in fairly quick order. Ongley and Zimmerman added about 30, and J. And H. Robertson put up a very useful partnership for the eighth wicket, making all the difference in North Otago's score between meagre and respectable. Graham was patient for his 10 not out. Weir, who is a Waimate man, bowled most successfully, but none of the other bowlers caused much trouble, though Cockroft bowled than the figures indicate.

Hudson and Eaton opened for South Canterbury, and the former, an old Waitaki High School boy, was aggressive from the start. He played very good cricket, particularly on the off, and his 42 included many nice shots past cover. He was eventually excellently caught in the slips off Bannerman. Tweedie, formerly of the Dunedin Club, but now of Waimate, played free and pretty cricket for 84, though he was obviously lucky on several occasions. He and Herdman, who hit hard and straight, almost pulled the game out of the fire for South Canterbury, but Tweedie was eventually swung at a rising ball and was caught behind the wickets, and Zimmerman accounted for Herdman with a very nice ball. South Canterbury had five minutes to play and five runs to make when Lawton, the last man in, kicked a ball into his wicket. Bannerman, 3 for 44, was the best of the local bowlers, and his figures would have been better with ordinary luck. Graham, two bowled very steadily until he was faced by a left-hander, and Zimmerman struck a good length in his second essay. H. Roberson was put on to effect a change in which he succeeded, but he was bowled too much.
