Valley ended Union's unbeaten run in Borton Cup cricket when it registered its first win of the season with a 192 run victory at King George Park. St Kevin's College defeated Waitaki Boys High School by 93 runs in a match which doubled as a Gillette Cup game and Albion beat Oamaru at Awamoa Park by 127 runs. It was ironic that all three teams that won the toss and put the opposition in to bat lost their games although a number of teams were depleted with the North Otago team away in a Hawke Cup elimination game against South Canterbury in Timaru.
A fine innings of 83 from all-rounder Brad Kernahan set Albion on its way to a 216 run total before the final wicket fell in the 41st over. Scott Guyton gave support down the order with 23 while with the ball for Oamaru Josh Gutsell and Regan George took three wickets each and Paul Selbie claimed two for 35.
Oamaru was never really in the hunt after being 61 for three after 18 overs. It then lost five wickets for the addition of only 23 runs before it was all over when the last wicket fell at 89 in the 30th over. Gerry Cunningham top scored with 31 while Kernahan took two for 21 and Marshal Smith returned the fine figures of six for 30.
Sent in to bat by Union Valley started slowly at 32 for two but raced through to 147 for four after 28 overs. Neil Gilbert( 71) and Nathan McLaughlin(110) set Valley alight scoring 345 for seven in its 50 overs. Byron Neil hit out lustily down the order for an unbeaten 66.Phil Crossan took three for 38 and Dan Conlan, two for 57.
Union after 13 overs was battling at 18 for three with Craig Direen getting two early wickets. The side slumped to 75 for seven after 25 overs and Union battled through to 153 before it was put to rest in the 33rd over Dan Conlan top scored with 44, John Anderson added 23, and Glen Marshall made 20, Dave Simpson and Direen finished with two wickets each.
St Kevin's mainly through some good batting from Tim O'Connor(43), Tim O'Malley(26), John Bartlett(29) and Hugh Slater(26) made it through to 180 before the final wicket fell in the 32nd over. Riley Rooney took two for 35, Adrian Myburgh, three for 42 and Michael Burgess , a new cap, took three for 20 on his debut. Waitaki Boys was dismissed for 87 in the 21st over with Hayden Tisdall(34) providing some resistance. Tom Gourlay took six for 41 off his ten overs while Jeremy Smith claimed three for 18.
