After one challenge, the Payne Tempero Trophy has a new home at the Oamaru Cricket Club at Excelsior.

Oamaru defeated original holders Union by 87 runs at King George Park on Saturday in round two of North Otago senior cricket to claim the new trophy cricketers have already named the Ranfurly Shield.

The Chocos, behind by four wickets from Mark Creighton and two scalps from David Sewell and Nathan Mitchell, demolished Union's vaunted batting line-up for 76 in 23.4 overs, chasing Oamaru's modest 163-9.

The trophy's namesakes - Union and North Otago life members Russell Payne and Ted Tempero - were present to hand over the trophy over to a satisfied Oamaru captain Ben Coleman. "It was a real honour to receive it because Russell and Ted have been pillars of Union and North Otago cricket for the last 40 years. It's a trophy I think should be respected because of them," Coleman said. "We were certainly motivated to play with the 'Ranfurly Shield' on the line. It was a nice a moment and we'll definitely respect the trophy and play good, hard cricket to defend it."

David Sewell, known more for his bowling exploits, saved Oamaru's innings earlier on a chilly afternoon, scoring a patient 45 as the challengers recovered from 86-6 to see out the 45 overs and post a defendable total.

"We thought 160 would be 20 runs shy, but it ended up being 87 runs too many," Coleman said.
Coleman who was brilliantly caught by Mark Wilson at short mid-wicket for a four ball duck, has faced five balls in two innings in the young season for zero runs but it could see a silver lining in Oamaru's perfect start.

"Hey I'll keep getting ducks if the team keeps winnings. I'll sacrifice for that."
Oamaru will defend the trophy next week at their home ground Whitestone Contracting Centennial Park against St Kevin's College.
