David Sewell almost always does damage with the ball.

But it was with the bat the one-time New Zealand test cricketer had just as much impact on Saturday.

Sewell who played one international test match against Zimbabwe in 1997, hit a vital 45 runs to rally Oamaru from disaster, then claimed two of three top-order wickets as Oamaru claimed the Payne Tempero Trophy from Union at King George Park.

After a solid start, helped by a 44 run second wicket partnership between Regan George (27) and Robbie Hill, Oamaru then slumped to 86-6 after losing four wickets for 19 runs. Sewell then sacrificed runs for consolidating his wicket early but loosened to strike boundaries regularly as Oamaru complied 163-9 from their 45 overs.

Sewelly really saved the day for us captain Ben Coleman said. "He didn't have many partners by the time he got in there. He's a bloody good bat actually. He went from 20 to 45 very quickly. It was crucial because it gave us momentum going into the field."

Sewell's express pace in swingers, coupled with Nathan Mitchell's out swinging deliveries, troubled Union from the outset. After knocking the top off the order, having Union 12-3 after 7.1 overs, Mark Creighton helped to finish off the holders, claiming match-best figures of 4-15 from 10 overs.

Coleman said the wickets of Duncan Drew, caught behind of Mitchell, and Andrew McCulloch, bowled by Creighton, which put Union five wickets down, were key moments in the chase.

Mitchell finished with 2-31, Sewell 2-22 while McCulloch top-scored for Union with 26. Phil Crossan, captain Paul Johnston and North Otago coach James Cutt all took two wickets in Oamaru's innings.

Defending Borton Cup holders Valley fell to their second straight loss, and second to schoolboys, as they fell by five wickets at St Kevin's College.

The 10-man Valley side posted a solid 206-8 from 45 overs, with Mark Paterson top-scoring with 43 runs, but despite having SKC at 25-3, Valley's weakened bowling line-up, coupled with strong batting from Robbie Smith, Rowan McKenzie and Jeremy Thomas helped SKC ease past Valley's total in the 35th over.

After Valley openers Byron Neale and Scott Young had dismissed the top order, Smith and McKenzie paired for an 111-run fourth-wicket partnership, before Smith and Thomas tacked on another 65 for the fifth wicket.

Debutant Neale scored 32 runs in Valley's innings, part of a 68 run fourth-wicket partnership with Paterson, taking the champs past the century after being 40-3. Daniel van der Slam had 35, James McNally 29 while Brent O'Conner, Ross Graham and Matt Lilly each took two wickets for SKC.

Albion made short work of first round winners WBHS at the Showground's.

Behind Dylan Winter's 5-14 from seven overs and Brad Kernahan's 3-6 from 6.1 overs, WBHS, who upset Valley on opening weekend, were dismissed for 52 in 23.1 overs. Jordan Horrell was the only batsmen to score in double figures with 21 while Daniel Fletcher also took 2-7 from five overs. In a poor batting display Waitaki were in trouble early at 14-4, then lost the fifth, sixth and seventh wickets with the score on 25.

Chris Ware took 2-9 from nine overs as Albion's chase faltered early at 18-3, before Nigel Moriarty, with 19 not out, and Kyle Adamson, 15 not out, combined as Albion cruised past the total in 22.1 overs, ending the match by 3.20pm.
