The Victorian cricketers arrived by the first express from the north to-day, and were met at the station by his Worship the Mayor (Mr J. McDiarmid) and representatives of the Borough Council and North Otago Cricket Association and members of the North Otago team. A large of citizens were also present. As the train was a quarter of an hour the late the ceremony at the station had necessarily to be brief in order to permit of the game being commenced at 2.15.
Mr McDiarmid, in extending a hearty welcome to the manager and members of the Victorian team, mentioned the happy recollections all had of the visit of the New South Wales team a year ago. The visit of this team had been an inspiration to local cricket, while several prominent members of the team had given lectures to the Waitaki boys, and these had borne excellent fruit. His Worship the felt sure that the pleasant experiences of last year's visit would be repeated with the present team; and he had no doubt we should learn a lot from them. Australia's climate was admirably suited for cricket, there being such a long summer. New Zealand, however, found her climate better suited to her national game, football. Mr McDiarmid mentioned the great improvement in New Zealand cricket during the last few years, much of was due to the visits of overseas teams. He concluded by expressing the wish that the Victorians would thoroughly enjoy their stay in Oamaru.
Mr McDiarmid then apologised for the absence of Mr Malcolm Holmes President of the North Otago Cricket Association who was unavoidably detained through illness.
Three cheers were then called for by the Mayor, and these were heartily given by those present.
Mr Mayne, captain of the Victorian team, thanked his Worship for the hearty welcome extended to his team. They would give their best on the cricket field and he felt sure they would enjoy their stay in Oamaru.
An adjournment was then made to the Queen's Hotel for luncheon.
The game did not commence till nearly 3.30, and at the time of going to press North Otago had lost one wicket for 17 (Uttley b Wallace 5).
