Victoria v. North Otago (first day)
The North Otago Primary Reps team celebrate the last wicket in the victory over West Coast in Westport.
Wednesday, 4 March 1925

North Otago's fixture against the Victorians began yesterday afternoon on the School Ground, when the outfield was in excellent order and the wicket in favour of the batsmen, for though the visitors got a lot of turn out of it, the ball made only a little of the pace from the wicket that they are accustomed to get. North Otago batted first, Uttley and Jacobs opening to the bowling of Wallace and Austin. Off the former's first over, bumped down fast and short, each of the batsmen touched one that went to the boundary behind the wicket. Austin's slow leg breaks were fatal to Uttley, who went down the wicket, changed his mind, and was bowled. Jacobs and Hargreaves carried on, runs coming slowly, though Hargreaves was batting confidently, especially against the fast bowler. Austin gave way to Hartkopf, who though bowling with a slow action, comes fast from the wicket and turns the ball a lot. Many of the balls were going away so much that the batsmen could not reach them. Wallace, having met with no success, gave way to Meddicot, whose accurate direction and length kept the batsmen quiet, and runs came but slowly, the first 30 taking 45 minutes. Hargreaves was missed off Austin, an easy chance, and later, should have been stumped, but his 20 runs were well earned, before he put his leg in front to one on the leg stump from Liddicut for a good four followed by an off drive for two and a square cut for the same number. Jacobs was getting an occasional one through the slips or to long leg, and was satisfied to wait for them. Sumpter failed to get over a good length ball from Liddcut which he endeavoured to drove, and was caught at long off. Zimmerman opened carefully, but dealt harshly with the loose ones, timing his strokes well. Jacobs did not stay long with him but was concluded a very useful innings by scooping one to fine leg. Searle was not comfortable to the slow bowling, and by this time the light, never good had become very dull, so that even the slow bowling was difficult to pick up. Willis relieved Hartkopf, whose bowling had cost 29 without getting a wicket, and proceeded to clean up the remainder. Zimmerman continued to bat well, one or two of his drives being particularly well timed. He had reached 46 when Woodfull got a fast one past him. The last wicket fell just on time.
