North Otago v. Victoria (second day)
Stephan Grobler attempt to cut to square
Thursday, 5 March 1925

The Victorian-North Otago match was continued yesterday morning on a wicket which the light fall of rain caused to bump in spots. Wallace and Willis opened to Zimmerman, whose swinging balls the former took on the pads. The partnership did not last long, for Wallace was run out going for a short run. Austin, who followed, played a number of uppish strokes though playing too early, but none of them came to hand. Hargreaves bowled in place of Atkinson, but could not control his length, and was punished freely. Kinder gave a rest to Zimmerman, who had bowled seven overs for 14 runs, keeping a very steady length. Austin should have been caught off him at mid-on, and later the same batsmen had a narrow escape when Kinder stopped, but just failed to hold a very hot chance of his own bowling. Hargreaves was persevered with, and Austin, in trying to turn a ball to leg, skied it, and was caught at the wicket. Meanwhile Willis has been going along steadily, scoring prolifically with a hook strike. Millar who followed Austen, was not impressive, and, touching a short one from Sumpter, was well caught by Zimmerman in the slips, the third wicket falling at 137. Liddicutt joined Willis, who was going strong, being especially severe and accurate in hooking anything short. Off one over from Sumpter he hit two fine sixes over the bowler's head and a four. Only a little later he put one up to Hargreaves at cover, and thus concluded a good strike. He took only 95 minutes to get his century, which included five sixes and eleven fours, 4 for 181. Hartkopf hit powerfully, particularly through the covers. Soon after the resumption of play following the luncheon adjournment he hit one from Zimmerman to Grainger in the outfield, who made a good catch over the bowlers head. H. Austin and Liddcut joined forces and the latter showed great power, putting his 18 stone behind the bat,. His 63 runs occupied only 38 minutes and all the bowlers were treated with scant respect. Liddicut after a well-played innings of 51 was run out in calling Austin for an impossible run. Austin soon after was out l..b.w. endeavouring to force a straight one from Zimmerman to the on side. The rain that had been falling for half an hour, became heavier and play was stopped at 3 o'clock with the score at 7 for 314. The bowlers since lunch had found difficulty in holding the very slippery ball, but succeeded remarkably well, Zimmerman keeping a particularly steady length. The North Otago fielding, with the exception of a few bad lapses, was keen and clean. Searle and Sumpter being notable for a deal of good work.

At the afternoon tea adjournment Mr Bean, the visitors manager, Mr Mayne, Mr Woodfull, and Mr Ellis all expressed their appreciation of the hospitality shown to the team locally and of the wonderful reception they had received in New Zealand. They spoke of the kindness of Mr and Mrs Milne in entertaining them to lunch and Mrs H.S. Orbell and Mrs F. Jones and their assistants who provided such delectable afternoon teas.

In the evening both teams were entertained at a dance organised for the Cricket Association by Mrs. R.S. Orbell, and all appeared to thoroughly enjoy themselves.
