On resuming this morning the wicket was much faster, and the visiting bowlers (O'Callaghan and McCaskill) got on a good deal of pace, while the wicket had lost the tendency to shoot. The Oamaru team started badly, early losing Uttley, who, before he had scored, was given out leg before wicket to O'Callaghan. In fact, the proclivity of the local men to get out leg before was one of the features of the game, and it was strange coincidence that they all succumbed to the same umpire. F. Ongley again kept his end up steadily, and played quietly until the sixth wicket had fallen, when, in attempting to hit, he was caught. Matters looked blue for Oamaru with seven wickets down for 35, but Curran and A. Ongley somewhat changed the complexion of affairs by contributing 10 and 16 (not out) respectively, the former getting another of his popular big hits for five of O'Callaghan. The innings concluded by Glass getting his leg in front to Temple, the score then standing at 67.
With 80 to make South Canterbury made a bad start, Hewat clean bowling Adcock in the first over, while Machen fell a victim to Hambley at point only a few runs later. Cox kept his end up most successfully, and but for him the innings would have appeared somewhat of a rot, for Thomas fell to a good one from Hewat without scoring, and O'Callaghan and Lynch were in trouble for most of the time they were at the wicket. At the luncheon adjournment South Canterbury was still 38 behind with five wickets to fall.
