An unbeaten 173 from opening batsman Nick Webster laid the foundation for Valley's massive 316 from two in the eighth round of Borton Cup on Saturday against Albion which could only produce 203 at Weston Park in reply.
Union batsman Duncan Drew was dismissed just eight runs short of his century but was instrumental in giving his side the momentum to make 251 and then restricted Waitaki Boys High School to 176 at King George Park.
Oamaru winning the toss and batting first set St Kevin's College the task of scoring 252 to win, a target the College side found too difficult being dismissed for 195.
Webster and Byron Neil produced a first wicket stand of 113 before Neil was dismissed for 24. Neil Gilbert joined Webster and added 42 before the side reached 316 in its 45 overs. Brad Kernahan took both wickets to fall for Albion at a cost of 45 runs.
Albion started brightly and was 18 for one in the fourth over and after 16 overs had extended this to 104 for three with Jason Greaney (37) and Blair Rawson giving Albion a solid base with the pair adding 80 runs for the second wicket. Brad Kernahan (43) and Peter Cartwright (23) were the only other Albion batsman to fire as the side was dismissed for 203 in the 35th over. Scott Young returned the excellent figures of four for 29 off eight overs while Tony Gray took three for 62 off his ten overs.
Union won the toss in the Payne/Tempero challenge trophy match at King George Park and although it lost an early wicket to be 13 for one after three overs it battled through to 65 for two after eleven overs. Drew dominated the bowling with his fine 92 with Stephen Lamb (21) and Phillip Crossan (22) the pick of the remainder. Sean Todd produced the best bowling figures for Waitaki with four for 46 off ten overs while Chris Ware claimed three for 48 and Stu Dickinson two for 32.
After 15 overs, Waitaki was 71 for three with James McAuslin on 38. McAuslin went on to make 67 to keep Waitaki in the match but the guile of Glynn Cameron, who took six for 34 of 9.2 overs, destroyed the Waitaki lower order and the side was dismissed for 176 in the 32nd over.
A solid 56 from Khalil enabled Oamaru to make 256 before the side was dismissed in the 40th over. Khalil hit twelve fours in reaching his half-century while Josh Gutsell added 43 and Regan Gutsell (39) and David Tonkin (33) made valuable contributions.
Alex Baddock and Ben Cant took three wickets each for St Kevin's College. St Kevin's was in early bother at 42 for two after eleven overs and then fell to 101 for six in the 23rd over.
It was only a fine unbeaten knock of 61 from Baddock that gave St Kevin's a respectable 195 before the side was dismissed in the 38th over with Mark Lilley (23) giving Baddock some support. Mark Creighton took three for 42 while Ben Coleman and Regan George took two wickets each for Oamaru and ensuring that it remained five points behind Union in Borton Cup Cricket.
