North Otago v. South Canterbury
Jeremiah Shields in action against Canterbury Country in the Hawke Cup Challenge
Saturday, 17 February 1906

Oamaru cricketers were treated to the choicest of weather yesterday in which to play off their fixture against South Canterbury representatives, who arrived by the first express. The fineness of the weather was remarkable insomuch as for so many weeks previously every day seemed to be wetter than its predecessor. It was for this reason that the wicket, through perfectly plumb, was slow, causing the ball to hang. Winning the toss from Uttley, Cox, who captained the visitors, sent his opponents in to bat. The local men started in anything but an auspicious manner, Jones, being cleaned bowled by O'Callaghan when the score stood at only 1. F. Ongley and Uttley made a steady stand, but at 22 Uttley returned a soft one to the Waimate bowler. Temple, who had bowled at the other end, was not doing much good, and was soon replaced by McCaskill. R. Ongley, before the score had been augmented, fell a victim to O'Callaghan, who was keeping very low on the wicket. M. Ongley was more successful, and before he was out l.b.w. to Machen, for whom O'Callaghan had made way, the score had reached 40. Hewat, who played in place of Brooker, shaped well, considering his lack of practice, and his innings of 19 was a most acceptable one to his side. Borton had hard luck in being run out through backing up too far before he got going. Curran, with his customary vigour, smote 13 of a very few balls, including a very nice 5 at Lynch's expense, but O'Callaghan proved too much for him soon after, and, a few minutes later, the innings concluded through Hambley being run out.

The visitors opened with Machen and Adcock to the bowling of Uttley and Hewat, and their start was not a whit more promising than had been of that of their opponents, Adcock being thoroughly beaten by Uttley, who was getting on a great deal of work. The wicket was too slow for Hewat, but he retained a good length throughout, and the batsmen never seemed very comfortable to either bowler. Cox, after scoring 12, fell a victim to ambition in attempting to repeat a big hit, being well caught by R. Ongley in their long field. Thomas, O'Callaghan, Lynch and Fulton all troubled the bowlers but little, and 7 wickets were down for 46.Temple, however, shaped well,, and though Mills and Gibson did not aid him materially, McCaskill, with 12, assisted the Geraldine man to carry the score to 77 before Uttley broke through Temple's defence.
