The North Otago and South Canterbury elevens played a match at Timaru on Saturday, the latter winning on the first innings by 29 runs. The wicket was unequivocally bad, and did all those things a wicket should not do. The ball bumped or shot according to the spot it struck, and kicked about in most recalcitrant manner. The home team batted first, and McWhirter and Eaton gave them a good start, the former going for the bowler aggressively. Blundell and Zimmerman opened, the former having 17 runs knocked off his first two overs, and Hargreaves took his place. With the score at 50 Zimmerman clean bowled McWhirter for 33, and Kane took his place. With Eaton be carried on the scoring, and the century was hoisted before Blundell got past Kane with a ball that kept low. Ongley had had a couple of overs, but unfortunately did no persist with himself for the wicket was made for him, as the second innings proved. Blundell took up the bowling from Hargreaves, and in less than six overs took five wickets for 11 runs. He kept a good length and accurate direction, and thoroughly deserved his success. None of the other South Canterbury batsmen gave any trouble. Eaton was the best of them, playing orthodox cricket and keeping his keeping his end up against a difficult attack. He was lucky in two decisions, but got his runs well. North Otago had a quarter of an hour's play before lunch. Ongley was caught in the slips, and Jones on the long boundary, and Grainger was bowled, so that three wickets were down for 16. Uttley joined Jacobs after lunch and settled down to a good innings. He got most of his runs on the on side, and played a skilful and patient innings before a ball that kicked badly went into the slips off the corner of his bat. Jacobs failed to get across to a ball on the off and chopped it into his wicket. Gale jumped out to drive an off ball that was too wide for him, got it on the corner of his bat and fell to a slip catch. Hargreaves was shaping very well, when he was caught off a bumpy ball on the leg side. Zimmerman fell victim to a shooter before he got going. H. Robertson, got out in the same manner as Jacobs. Elmslie and Blundell carried on the score, both playing nicely. South Canterbury in the second strike made 114, Eaton again causing the bowlers most troubly his stubborn and accurate defence. After trying the other bowlers without much success, Ongley went on, and striking a spot, had the batsmen in constant trouble. He kept a good length and came back from the off abruptly. His figures, eight for 35, speak for themselves. North otago were left with 143 to get for a win. The prior arrangement between the Associations was that play was to go on until 6.30, but the captains had fixed the hour at 6 o'clock. Some argument arose at to what play should stop, and no definite agreement had been reached when North Otago went in to bat. The batsmen went for the bowling from the start. Gale cracked up 26 in quick time, including a big hit for 6 out of the ground, before he jumped out and was stumped. Uttley, in trying to turn a ball to leg, discovered too late that it was a shooter. Zimmerman hit lustily for 33, including six fours and a six, and Hargreaves had two sixes in his 16 not out, including one over the fence. In the hour 103 was put up. When the last over was announced by the Timaru umpire, Mr Wood, Zimmerman went for a hit, and was caught of a mis-hit. If the extra time had been played North Otago would have probably have for the runs necessary for a win, certainly lack of time would not have stood in the way, so that from their point of view the earlier finish had been unsatisfactory. North Otago's fielding was generally good in both innings.
