A North Otago eleven, comprising several candidates for Otago Brabin Shield honours, defeated the Otago Colts by 20 runs on the first innings in a one-day cricket match played at the University Oval, Dunedin yesterday. The feature of the match was a fine century by North Otago captain opening batsman, A. Berry. His knock of 117, included 14 4's and one 6 and took 178 minutes to compile.

North Otago batted first and made 186. Apart from Berry, M. Sandri (17) and D. Hall (14) were the only players to reach double figures. Sandri hit a 6 and two fours, the 6 being gained off the bowling of B. Sutcliffe who coaches the Otago Colts and captained the side yesterday. With just over an hour left to play, Otago was all out for 166. the North Otago attack proving to be very accurate. M. Sandri must have enhanced his claims for inclusion in the Brabin Shield team with an impressive performance with the ball. Bowling with sustained vim and maintaining his pace well took five wickets for 62 runs of 19.3 overs, four of the victims being clean-bowled. S. Goodwin had the distinction of claiming Sutcliffe's wicket, the New Zealand representative and selector going out to a brilliant catch by G. Johnson. A. Currie secured two wickets, clean bowling the outstanding young Otago Colt, R. Murray, who went for only three runs. The North Otago fielding was of a high standard. B. Carleton at point bringing off a magnificent catch to effect the cheap dismissal of one of the Otago openers.

There was nothing to the game at this stage but North Otago went in to bat again and had made 98 runs for the loss of one wicket at stumps. P. Moir hit six 4's and a 5 in an attractive undefeated 40, and I. Geddes and B. Carleton each contributed 23.
