Tuesday, 15 January 2008

Valley and Oamaru registered wins in the second round of Dick Hunt trophy 20/20 cricket on Saturday.
At King George Park Union, after winning the toss, asked Oamaru to bat first. Oamaru after two overs was 17 for one and the side maintained the momentum to be 197 for eight after 20 overs.
Glen Paterson led the way with a rollicking 44 and Nick Johnston produced a hard-hit 54 while Matt George marked his return to local cricket with 47. Dan Conlon was the pick of the Union bowlers, taking four for 31, while Shaun Todd claimed two for 15.
Union's slow run rate early on saw it 46 for one after seven overs. The next eight overs produced only 52 runs as the batting faltered against the Oamaru attack.
Glynn Cameron attempted to hold the side together with a gritty 41 while Antony Cromwell provided support before he retired on 32. Union managed to bat through its 20 overs, but at stumps was 146 for eight. Regan George and James Ferris took two wickets each for Oamaru.
The Albion tail failed to wag as the side was dismissed for 124 with three balls remaining in the match. Batting first Valley - mainly thought the efforts of Adam Baddock (47) - compiled a reasonable total, with Brent O'Conner taking three for 31 and Dylan Winter, two for 30.
After two overs Albion was 16 for one, but the next six overs added only 41 runs. Steve Halliwell (29), Dan Fletcher (26) and Gareth Duncan (26) saw Albion through to a winning position, needing only 27 runs of the last 12 balls. Valley's Tony Gray however, put paid to Albion's hopes taking three wickets off his last two overs to dismiss Albion for 123 with three balls remaining. Gray finished with three for 19 while Alex Baddock and Hamish McKenzie took two wickets each.
