A cricket match between North Otago and South Canterbury was played at Timaru on Saturday, and resulted in a win for the former by 36 runs. South Canterbury batted first and were disposed of for 130 runs. North Otago made a bad start, the first and second wickets falling with the score at five. When five wickets were down for 23 runs the outlook was anything but bright, but Sumpter and Zimmerman put a different complexion on the game, carrying the score to 50 before the latter was dismissed. After seven batsmen had been disposed of for 63 runs Sumpter and Atkinson became associated and both played really well. The partnership was not broken till the total had been taken to 152, when Sumpter was caught by Davies after compiling 49 runs. Atkinson, who scored 46, was unbeaten at the close of the innings. The wicket was in good condition. Messrs B.R. MacDonald (Timaru) and E. Earl (Oamaru) acted as umpires.
Ongley, who was captain of the North Otago team, won the toss and sent South Canterbury to the wickets. Harper and Hinds opened the innings, while Hargreaves and Graham were entrusted with the bowling. With the score at 17 Hargreaves disposed of Hinds, who was caught by Jacobs near the wickets. Hudson, who came next, did not last long, being bowled of his pads by Hargreaves before he had scored. Harper and Herdman carried the score to 31, when the former was run out as the result of a smart return. Zimmerman took Graham's place at the bowling crease when the score stood at 30. A serviceable stand was made by Herdman and Kane, who were not separated until the score sheet showed 65 runs. Harper mis-hit Zimmerman to slips where a catch was effected by Hargreaves. With the score at 65, Graham took up the bowling again, replacing Hargreaves, Thomas, who followed Herdman, was dismissed at 78, and Angland filled the vacancy. At 93 Kane stepped in front of one from Graham, and made way for Inglis, who was sent back to the pavilion without scoring. Angland was then joined by Wilson and the pair carried the score to 117, when the former was caught by Zimmerman of Hargreaves, who had replaced Graham with the ball when the score was 100. Davies batted briskly, assisting Wilson to carry the score to 130 before he was beaten by Zimmerman. McWhirter did not last long, being caught by Sumpter at mid-off before he had scored.
The opening batsmen for North Otago were Uttley and Jacobs, who faced the bowling of McWhirter and Hudson. When only five runs had been scored Jacobs called for an impossible run, and Uttley was run out. Brooker filled Uttley's place, but was beaten by the first ball from McWhirter, and made way for Hargreaves. At 13 Hargreaves was given out lbw and Ongley joined Jacobs. With the score at 21, Ongley was caught by Inglis behind the wickets. At this stage McWhirter had taken three wickets for four runs. Zimmerman joined Jacobs but when two runs had been added the later left his crease and was smartly stumped by Inglis. Sumpter and Zimmerman carried the score to 50, when the latter was dismissed by McWhirter. Kane took up the bowling in place of Hudson at 40. Graham joined Sumpter, but when the score stood at 63 the former was given out lbw to McWhirter. With seven wickets down Atkinson joined Sumpter and these players made a splendid stand, all efforts made to separate them being fruitless until the scoring sheet showed an aggregate of 152. Changes of bowling were made when the score was 90 (Harper relieving Kane) and at 100, when Wilson replaced Harper. At a later stage the bowling was entrusted to Thomas and Hudson. Sumpter was caught by Davies off Hudson. Todd was caught by Harper without any addition to the score and Mitchell assisted Atkinson to carry the figures to 166 before he was stumped Inglis.
During the tea afternoon tea adjournment Mr R.S. McDonald, president of the South Canterbury Cricket Association extended a hearty welcome to the visiting team. He hoped the fixture would become an annual one, and that the splendid old-time rivalry on the cricket field between the two districts would be revived, and that cricket would benefit accordingly. He called for cheers fro Mr Thomas and the ladies for generously providing afternoon tea. Hearty cheers were given.
Mr A.E. Lawrence president of the North Otago Cricket Association, responded. He acknowledged the cordiality of the welcome extended to the visitors, and expressed agreement with the view that such matches should be played annually, if not twice a year. He said the game had been interrupted in an interesting stage - for North Otago had lost five wickets for 27. He ventured to say that later on in the afternoon the glorious uncertainly of cricket would again be demonstrated., and that North Otago would bring their score up to their opponents. He thanked the ladies for providing afternoon tea, and called for united cheers, which were heartily given.
