The innings of North Otago developed into a Marathon after lunch, for Zimmerman and Carrington got going quickly, and the early bowlers were punished severely. Off two consecutive balls from McGowan, Zimmerman hit a six and a four, both straight drives, and later got a two. Carrington was not slow in getting to work, and quickly passed his half century. Zimmerman quietened down as the nineties were reached, the accurate bowling of Agnew being a factor in his inactivity, but he went to three figures with a couple of hook shots and a cover drive of Wish. Soon after, at 113, he was splendidly caught in the long field. His partnership with Carrington had realised 250 at a time when they were most wanted. Zimmerman played patient and correct cricket. His driving was forceful, and he used his feet much better than usual, while he made the bat hit the ball. Carrington was joined by Evans, the Waitaki High School boy, and batting admirably, his leg shots were especially well-timed, and he played several good strokes behind point. He had 129 on the board before he was clean bowled by Agnew in going for a hit. Evans got his runs with nice shoots, and was unfortunate enough to be caught right on the boundary off a fine clean drive. The rest of the innings was uneventful. Agnew carried off the bowling honours for his side. He was always a trier and never lost his length or his pace. None of the batsmen was able to take liberties with him as is proved by the fact that his 27 overs cost only 56 runs, and he took four wickets. The Southland batting in the first innings was not impressive, and despite the fact that the opening batsmen were given lives early in their careers, the whole effort realised only 88. Zimmerman was the most destructive agency. He swung consistently and kept a good length with the result that he took five wickets for four runs. He was bowling well, but the average flattered him. Keith secured the early wickets with the assistance of the field, and Evans, although he took only one wicket had all the batsmen guessing. He threw up a number of loose ones, but enough of a good length to be troublesome.
