The match between Otago and North Otago teams was robbed of much of its interest by the far from representative character of the respective sides, and by the restriction of play to one-day. The wicket at the school was in good order and easy, but the scoring was small. Otago, batting first lost four wickets for five runs. McKnight chopped a simple catch to McDonald at third man, Blair trapped Saxton with his leg in front, Talbot hit a ball hard onto his pad and was caught by McCallum and Chettleburg was out to a slip catch by Tonkin off Blair. Rodgerson (23) Sinclair (11) Torrance (22) and Robinson (18) improved the position. Torrance was batting very soundly when he put his leg in front to Tonkin. Eight wickets had fallen for 72 when Nimmo went in, and he laid about him to such good effect that he reached 65 in 18 minutes, his score including one six and 11 fours. He had that good fortune that often follows a bold course, for he was dropped all round the field, giving no less than seven chances, some difficult and some easy. As the result of his strike Otago's total was saved from being ridiculous. Blair bowled well for the home side taking four wickets for 29, the other wickets being shared by Maddigan (2), Tonkin, Davey and Kerr. Except for the lapses during Nimmo's pyrotechnics North Otago's out cricket was good. The local batsmen, facing the fast bowling of Nimmo and the slow leg breaks of Chettleburgh shaped no better than their opponents had done. The first three wickets fell fro 17. Kerr was beaten by a ball that came quick from the pitch. Brown was caught in the slips and Capstick was bowled by Nimmo. Robertson and Gordan were going well, but the schoolboy who had faced Nimmo confidently, touched a rising ball from Silber and was caught by Talbot at first slip off the wicketkeepers gloves. McDonald joined his clubmate, and runs came steadily until McDonald called for a short run to cover and McKnight threw down Robertson's wicket. McDonald hit a good six off Chettleburgh, but in attempting to repeat the shot was caught yards down the wicket and stumped. Maddigan and Blair established a useful partnership and were playing so confidently that it looked as though they might pass the visitor's score, but after the tea adjournment Blair was out lbw to Nimmo. He played the best cricket on the side, facing all the bowlers confidently and timing his shots off the slow bowler well. Shortly after Maddigan lost his wicket to Nimmo who bowled with a swinging yorker. Tonkin, who had followed Blair, was hitting freely and when McCallum joined him nine runs were wanted to pass Otago's score. When still five runs short Tonkin was bowled endeavouring to hit a boundary off a good length ball from Nimmo, so that the visitors won by five runs. Nimmo with four for 40 was the most successful of the visiting bowlers, Chettleburgh, four for 57, providing an admirable foil for his pace. Otago went in for a second strike and in a bad light lost six for 91. Talbot hit hard for 31, playing a very effective hook shot, before he was well caught in the deep field by Kerr, who was also caught Chettleburgh. Tonkin's catch with which he dismissed Nimmo off his own bowling was a very good one. Saxton (28) shaped well against the medium paced bowling, but was unhappy to Capstick's slows. The players were entertained to afternoon tea by Mrs M.S. Holmes,. The North Otago team was materially changed at the last moment through the inability of Zimmerman, Uttley, Taylor and A. Brooker to play, their places being filled by three School boy's and J. Robertson.
