The North Otago senior representatives emerged victorious from a one-day match with South Canterbury on the School ground on Saturday by one wicket and seventy-two runs, The weather was not good for cricket, rain finally causing the game to be abandoned.

The local players certainly made a fine showing the inclusion of Vorrath being amply justified. The surprise of the day was Uttley who lifted one of Kane's to Cockcroft and was out for a duck. Zimmerman and Vorrath made top scores, Bron not being far behind.

In Cyrill Davey, North Otago has one of its best bowlers, and this was proved on Saturday, when he took five wickets for 17 runs. Maddigan, with three for 37, was the only other bowler besides Brown to take any wickets.

For South Canterbury, Kane made the best showing, taking three for 46.

South Canterbury won the toss and Mason and Hamilton opened to the bowling of Zimmerman and Maddigan. Hamilton scored three singles before he snicked one from Maddigan, to Vorrath, who took a fine catch. 7-1-3. Two runs later, Jacobs, the incomer, lifted a ball to Brown at cover. 9-2-1. Mason and Kane took the score to 16 when Maddigan bowled the former. 16-3-4. Davies joined Kane, and both batsmen played careful, if slow, cricket. Kane was playing some good shots for his runs, while Davies was content to play defensive cricket.

Laney took over the attack from Zimmerman, his first over being a maiden. Davies commenced to score more rapidly, and Kane continued at a moderate pace. The score was 56 after little over an hour's play. Brown took over from Laney, and Kane survived an appeal for lbw off his second ball. Maddigan was bowling very steadily from the northern end, and the batsmen had to watch his deliveries very carefully. At times he kicked up very dangerously but most of his deliveries came through very fast. His figures at this stage were, 13 overs 24 runs, 3 wickets.

In Brown's third over, Davies opened out but he played all over the ball and was bowled.63-4-11. Marriot joined Kane, who had played good cricket for 36. Laney relieved Maddigan and Kane lifted his second ball for four. The next ball he snicked for four, bringing 70 up after one and a half hours play. Kane lifted Laney into the long field, but Maddigan dropped the catch. Kane then brilliantly drove Brown through the covers for 4 reaching the half-century with the stroke. Five runs were scored off Laney's next over, the scoreboard reading 80. Marriott pulled a short one from Brown to the leg boundary.

Zimmerman bowled in place of Laney, his first ball going for four byes, Kane turned the next one prettily to leg for a single, Marriott played a similar shot next ball for 3. Davey bowled at the southern end , Kane placing the first one down the gully for a brace. Two balls later Kane bought up the century with a nice drive to cover. Marriot survived an appeal off the last ball of the over. Kane had to go in Davey's next over, and Gillies took a good catch on the boundary. 100-5-5. Kane battled well for his runs, his score including seven fours. Marriot, who was playing confidently, scored 2 of Zimmerman's next one but he was dropped behind the wickets off Davey who was keeping the batsmen quiet.

Scoring slowed down for a period and then Buchanan brought 110 up by getting a full toss away to leg for four. Maddigan went on again, his first over yielding a single. In Davey's over, Marriot tipped a ball on the leg side and McCallum held a good catch. 115-6-18. Cockcroft joined Buchanan, and the scoring became very slow. Davey bowling two successive maidens, and then Cockroft lashed out and Laney held a catch right on the boundary. 128-7-2. McDougall joined Buchanan who hit Davey for four on the leg side. Vorrath relieved Maddigan and off his second and off his second ball McCallum made a good attempt to stump McDougall, but the batsmen managed to get his food back in time. He then hit Vorrath for a 4 and a 2, but the next ball went for byes, and in attempting a second run, McDougall as run out by a good return by Davey. 139-8-6. Mason joined Buchanan, who tipped the first ball of Davey's next over to Vorrath. 139-9-19. Cunningham was last man and scored a single. Mason being bowled by the last ball of the over, and the innings closed for 140.

Maddigan was in great form with the ball, dismissing Hamilton and Jacobs, Canterbury representative players in quick succession, and had all the batsmen playing him. Davey secured a good average, and kept the batsmen quiet.

North Otago opened their innings with Dick and Uttley, but lost Uttley in Kanes first over, lifting a ball to point. 0-1-0. Zimmerman joined Dick, and both were content to play the bowling of Kane and Brown was caught close in by Hamilton. Brown batted well and hit four boundaries, 123-4-34. Borrows joined Vorrath and the tea adjournment was taken without further score.

Eighteen runs were required upon resumption and these were secured by careful cricket. South Canterbury's total was now passed. Vorrath now opened out, and showed with a range of fine cricket. He hit Davies for 14 of one over, including a fine 6. He was caught of Kane in going for a hit. He scored a 6 and five boundaries. 180-5-44. Davey joined Borrows, but Borrows in the same over. 180-6-15.

Gilles joined Davey and the latter was going for a hit when he mistimed a ball, and was caught. 190-7-7. Laney joined Gillies who was caught 3 runs later. 193-8-3. Maddigan joined Laney who was going for the bowling in good style and quickly reached double figures. A misunderstanding between the batsmen saw Laney run out. It was now raining heavily and the game finished in a good win for North Otago.

Kane was the best bowler for South Canterbury and kept all the batsmen quiet.
