South Canterbury beat North Otago by nine wickets and thus retained the Richards Trophy in a representative cricket match played at Ashbury Park, Timaru over the weekend.

North Otago could only notch 286 in the two innings (114 and 172).

South Canterbury totalled 285 for nine wickets declared on the first innings and one down for four on the second.

North Otago threw wickets away in both innings on a pitch that offered no encouragement to bowlers, although South Canterbury were favoured by the weather. They scored most of their tally after tea on the first day when North Otago had to contend with a wet ball.

Former North Otago representative Wilson had a slashing day, taking two fine catches on the first day and scoring a well-merited 88 with a classic array of shots.

W. Cubbit was the mainstay of North Otago's first innings scoring a soundly complied 28. He was the only batsman to score over 20 in a rather unfortunate first innings.

However, North Otago improved in the second innings especially with a fine innings of 32 from Cartwright. Grant and Hean notched 21 each and Berry added 20.

Nicholson and Cosgrove were the chief wicket-takers for South Canterbury while Cartwright and Murray took thee apiece for North Otago.
