A combined Oamaru team, under the auspices of the North Otago Cricket Association, journeyed to Waimate on Saturday to play a South Canterbury eleven, the players of which were drawn from Timaru, Temuka, and Waimate Clubs. Mr R.C. Hewat skippered the North Otago team, which had to put up with what was a morally bad beating. South Canterbury went to the wickets first and amassed 56, Hewat and Ongley bowled well throughout the innings. In replay North Otago could only make 40, Borton's 7 being top score for the side. Fisher was the most successful bowler for the Canterburyites. The latter, in their second innings, knocked up 114, to which Hadfield (40) and Fisher (not out 15) were the chief contributors. North Otago's second innings had realised only 40 for five wickets when the stumps were drawn. An interesting feature of the game was that in Canterbury's second innings the first five wickets fell for 12 runs (due mainly to Ongley's insidious lobs). Then rain came down, and, when the game was resumed, the batsmen had it all their own way. Somehow or other however, this state of things was reversed when North Otago went in again. The fielding of both sides was good throughout the match, and, on the whole, a most enjoyable day was spent, the weather notwithstanding. Every praise is due to the Waimate cricketers and their lady friends for the pains they took to render the holiday a pleasant one.
