Forcing the pace at a time when runs were badly needed, J Watson was instrumental in giving North Otago a first innings victory against South Canterbury in the senior representative fixture at the Rectory ground on Saturday. In a brilliant display he scored 80 not out, partnered much of the way by A. Forbes, who made 50 in another good display.. North Otago made 186 at a cost of five wickets, as against South Canterbury's 163 for seven wickets declared. The highlight of the home side's innings was the excellent batting of E.C. Earwalker, who scored a stylish 61 not out, easily topping the individual scores for he local team. Rain during the day caused several adjournments, but interest was sustained and the fate of the match was in doubt until the final five minutes.
North Otago also won the second grade fixture against South Canterbury played the same day at School Park. The visitors won on the first innings by 26 runs.
In spite of the rain, both wickets were firm, but a slippery ball was a handicap to bowlers who were also frequently troubled with the greasy surface of the grasses.
