Waitaki Boys' High School proved too strong for Timaru Boys', with a 99 run at the Year 10 interschool over the weekend.
On a fantastic day for cricket, Waitaki Boys’ won the toss and elected to bat first.
The decision immediately looked parlous as opener Harry Souter-Allan received a peach of a delivery and edged to second slip, where a fine catch was taken.
Kieran McClea joined the fray for what was to become a sterling innings, which would see him bat for 39.5 overs of a 40 over innings.
The going was slow against some fine opening bowling and just when the shackles appeared to be loosening, Jonny MacKay hit a boundary, then proceeded to edge a rising ball to first slip. The score was five for two.
Nathan Smith then produced a sterling innings in what was a rare pleasure to witness. At the end of 40 overs, Waitaki Boys’ were 277 for 2, Nathan Smith unbeaten on 168 and Kieran McClea on 68 not out.
Smith smote the bowling to all parts and, after having reached his hundred, enjoyed smashing boundaries, adding the extra 68 to his score.
McClea’s innings was one of grit and determination and no less finer than Smith’s at the other end of the pitch.
Timaru Boys’ batted well in response.
They rejigged their batting order to give some stability to the middle ranks at the expense of losing quick wickets.
Timaru were quickly three down and at 100-5, the game looked up for Waitaki to take the win.
