South Canterbury and Southland will meet next Saturday in Invercargill to possibly decide the Zone six Hawke Cup challengers with both sides tied on twenty points after the weekends cricket. Both teams had first innings wins against North Otago and Mid Canterbury respectively while both will complete the round on 22/23 February when South Canterbury will meet Mid Canterbury in Timaru and Southland plays Otago Country on the same weekend
North Otago won the toss in Oamaru and asked South Canterbury to bat first at Whitestone stadium/ South Canterbury was given a rollicking start by openers Richie Preston and James Laming who set a 20/20 pace to bring up the half century within the first hour of play before Preston (37) was dismissed with the total at 76. Laming brought up his half century in 60 minutes off 56 balls before he was dismissed for 73 with the total at 112. Only two of the remaining South Canterbury batsmen took the opportunity to build on the momentum sent by Preston and Laming with wicketkeeper Adam Beck adding 54 and Jack Harper batting at four making 39. The South Canterbury innings closed at 276. Francois Mostert returned the best figures of four for 68 while left arm off spinner Jordan Horrell claimed three for 36 and Ben Cant two for 25 for North Otago.
North Otago lost opener Jeremiah Shields at ten and fellow opener Glynn Cameron at 29 but Cant came to the rescue with a fine 52 but Jeremy Smith(19), Duncan Drew(5) and Mostert(9) saw North Otago slump to 114 for six an hour and a quarter before stumps on the first day. North Otago added a further 38 runs before stumps but lost the wicket of Nathan Smith to be 152 for seven at stumps. North Otago added only five further runs on the second day but lost three wickets to be all out for 157 and was forced to follow on.
Craig Hinton finished with five for 35 and was sitting on a hat trick after taking the last two North Otago wickets but opening the bowling in North Otago second innings the chance of the hatrick went as he bowled a wide. Nathan McNicol took three for 54 and Sam Carlaw, two for 47.
When rain stopped play on the second day ten minutes before midday North Otago was; 41 for three with Hinton taking two of the three wickets to fall as the rain came.&; Play was finally abandoned at; 3.00p.m. giving South Canterbury first innings points.
In Ashburton Zone six, co leaders with South Canterbury, Southland had to be content with first innings points as rain continued to fall at 3.30p.m.Southland put in to bat by Mid Canterbury made 225 but at stumps on the first day had the home side 107 for nine. The side added a further 21 runs on Sunday morning &to be all out for 130. Southland in its second innings was restricted to 135 leaving Mid Canterbury the task of scoring 229 to win before the rain intervened at 3.30p.m.
