Union maintained its ten point lead after the eighth round of Borton cup cricket with an eight wicket win over St Kevin's College. Waitaki Boys High School upset Albion with a two wicket win while Oamaru retained second place with a six wicket win over Valley.
Union won the toss at King George park and put St Kevin's in to bat. The demise of Simon Butler(33) and Ben Cant saw St Kevin's 51 for two after 21 overs. The College side recovered to be 129 for five after 37 overs with promising young batsman, Ton Squire on 55. Squire who made 67 the previous week went on to make 90 as St Kevin's batted through the 45 overs to make 190 for eight. Paul Johnston took four for 43 and Glynn Cameron who was to feature with the bat in Union's innings took three for 20.
Ants Cromwell(25) gave Union a solid base at 66 for two after 17 overs and Thomas Shields(56) and Cameron(44 not out) then produced a third wicket stand off 113 to guide Union to 192 for three in the 39th over. Butler took two for 31 for St Kevin's.
Waitaki Boys decision after winning the toss to ask Albion paid off at Milner Park. Albion lost three early wickets but Paul O'Dell(49) lifted Albion to 148 for eight after 37 overs with Peter Cartwright chipping in with 25, Albion was dismissed for 177 with Daniel Fletcher unbeaten on 40.Jordan Horrell, Nathan Hill, Chris Ware and Craig Robertson took two wickets each.
After 11 overs Waitaki Boys was 56 for two with Ware unbeaten on 31. He went on to top score with 61 getting assistance from Kieran Paterson(38) as Waitaki Boys passed the Albion total with two wickets in hand in the 39th over. Brad Kernahan took three for 28 and Fletcher two for 35.
Valley won the toss and batted first at Weston Park against Oamaru. Opener Nick Webster(21) gave the side an encouraging start but Valley then lost four quick wickets to be 66 for four after 24 overs. Hamish McKenzie(24) and Geoff Mansfield(28) made valuable runs down the order as Valley succumbed to be all out for 145 in the 42nd overall rounder Josh Gutsell took four for 27 off eight overs for Oamaru.
Oamaru lost Gerry Cunningham to be 29 for one after seven overs but Jamie Ferris(33) and Glen Paterson(53 not out) lifted Oamaru to a winning 147 for four in the 27th over.
