Union maintained a 20 point lead in Borton Cup cricket when it struggled to a four wicket win over Valley at Weston. Third placed Albion moved to within 10 points of second placed Oamaru with a 37 run win over Oamaru while Waitaki Boys High School gave itself a chance of making the semi finals when it beat St Kevin's College by 70 runs at Milner Park. All three games were affected by slow, grassy outfields and soft green top pitches.
Oamaru asked Albion to bat first at Whitestone stadium and restricted the Albion total to 125 off 37.2 overs. Oamaru bowlers had the edge and after 23 overs Albion was 67 for four. A further ten overs saw further 35 runs added but at a cost of five wickets with Brad Kernahan(41) showing any form. Further down the order Dan Fletcher gave the total some respectability with an unbeaten 33 which included two massive sixes. Bowling for Oamaru Jamie Ferris took four for 32, David Sewell three for 31 and the ageless Paul Selbie, two for 37.
Oamaru slumped to 23 for three after 18 overs and further capitulation saw the side collapse to be 45 for six. Oamaru was eventually all out for 88 in the 34th over with Kernahan and Paul O'Dell taking three wickets each for Albion.
Less than 130 runs were scored in both innings at Weston Park on Saturday. Valley was put in by competition leaders, Union and was dismissed for 63 in the 34th over. Glynn Cameron was the pick of the Union bowlers claiming four for 11 off 6.3 overs while Phil Crossan and Paul Johnston took two wickets each.
Union appeared to be cruising at 49 for three in the 13th over but then slumped to 57 for six needing 64 to win a target reached in the 22nd over with Duncan Drew anchoring the innings with 21. John Blakely and James McNally took three wickets each for Valley.
Sent in to bat by St Kevin's, Waitaki Boys batted through its 45 overs to be 174 for nine at the conclusion of the innings. Stu Dickinson made 20 up the order while a Jordan Horrell 40 gave impetus in the middle order and an unbeaten 27 from Sean Todd added a little bit of cream. Ben Cant and Simon Butler took three wickets each for St Kevin's.
The early departure of player/coach Simon Butler who was trapped leg before by Chris Ware without scoring, the demise of other opener Ben Cant for 14 and the dismissal of hard-hitting Tom Squire without scoring saw St Kevin's 50 for four after 16 overs. Sean Conlan top scored with 21 but wickets fell rapidly and the innings ended at 104 in the 41st over. Dickinson completed a good double taking five for 14 off his 10 overs while Chris Ware knocked the top off the St Kevin's batting line-up with three for 29.
