A match-winning 104-run 10th wicket partnership and two hundreds were the highlights of Borton Cup cricket in the weekend.
Union batted first at home against Albion and reached 262/7 in its 50 overs. Mason James top scored with an unbeaten 73, while Duncan Drew (59), Blake James (41) and Brad Fleming (25) made significant additions to the total. Albion’s Hayden Creedy took 2-66 and Jacob Davies 2-43.
Despite Jonty Naylor scoring 40 and Creedy 36, Union looked like it had the game won with Albion 159-9, enter Ricky Whyte (47 not out) and Aneesh Bose (55 not out). The pair would turn the game on its head putting on an unbeaten 104 runs, Albion winning by a solitary wicket and with it the Payne Tempero Cup. Scott Kitto taking 4-52 for Union.
Oamaru managed 252 in 50 overs against Glenavy, Quinn Wardle leading the way with 106, while Nick Johnson (38) and Sarel Smit (34) also made good contributions. Glynn Cameron took 3/17, Rodney van Leeuwen 2/46, Ryan Moffat 2/13 and Kurt Thomas 2/33.
Glenavy, thanks to Hamish McCulloch (41) and van Leeuwen, were aggressive in their chase. Van Leeuwen only batting 17 overs for his 129, including 11 sixes. After the fast start, Glenavy cruised to a five-wicket win in the 38th over, Ross McCulloch (37) and Moffat (20) seeing their team to victory. Johnston took 3/16.
Batting first against Waitaki Boys, Valley made 230 in 38 overs, Jason Forrest (59) top scoring while Liam Mavor (20) and Locky Kingan (33) contributed to their teams score.
For Waitaki Logan Wilson took 5-34 and Sam Petrie 2-47.
Waitaki struggled in its chase, finishing with 143 all out in the 49th over. Billy Wilson scored 28 not out and Jaden Dowling (20), while Jack Cameron took 3-33 and Taine Stirling 2-32.
