Craig Smith celebrates taking 1 of his 6 wickets for the match
Monday, 6 November 1899

The representatives of the Ngapara-Maerewhenua Cricket Club came to town on Saturday to do battle against the Oamaru A team. As the B team had suffered defeat at their hanmds, and as this was the first match played by the A team an unusual amount of interest was taken in the game. D. Aitken, the Ngapara captain, won the toss from Hewat, and sent Oamaru in to bat. Hewat and Tennent opened for Oamaru, facing the bowling of Nimmo and Sherriffs. Hewat had the misfortune to lose his wicket off Nimmo's second ball, Sherriffs making a splendid catch near the boundary. H. Teschemaker joined Tennent and 70 was reached before Tennent was caught behind the wickets off a mis-hit. Both batsmen played stubbornly , and no lless that eight bowlers were tried before they were separated. W. McDonald joined Teschemaker, and runs came freely. Teschemaker skied one from Sherriffs, and was well caught in the long field by Hutchison. His score of 57 was the outcome of good careful cricket, his defence being very good. Shortly after McDonald was bowled by D. Weir for 25, with five wickets down for 121, Hewat declared the innings closed, C Teschemaker being not out with four runs to his credit. At 4.30 the Ngapara-Maerewhenua commenced their innings, which opened disastrously, as they lost six wickets for eight runs. Upon Nimmo and Aitken become partners, however a different aspect was put on the game, as boith batsmen were determined to keep their wickets. Change after change was rang on, but both batsmen deified all attempts. As last Jones attained the desired end, bowling Nimmo with a beauty. Sherriffs joined Aitken and another long stand was made, till eventually Aitken was caught by Holmes of Hewat. Aitken gave a splendid exhibition of defence, never giving a chance. He batted for an hour and a quarter, and turned a certain defeat into a more hopeful chance. The remaining batsmen did not trouble the bowlers muchm and the innings closed for 72, or 49 runs being their opponents. Sherriffs batted very stubbornly, and kept his wicket for 19. The Ngapara-Maerewhenua team deserve every credit for the splendid fight they made, leaving the game doubtful to the end. Another ten minutes would have made the match a draw. At the conclusion of the game cheers were given for the respective sides and umpires. Messres Moir and Roberson made impartial umpires, giving every satisfaction. The Ngapara-Maerewhenu a were entertained at dinner by the local men , and were left satisfied with the game.
